Day 1 – Whistler bound

January 27th, 2007 by maryjojo | 1 Comment | Filed in travels

We are off to Whistler today. It took us about 5 hours to get here, but we are ready to relax. After we finally got here, we went to the brewery just down the ways. Jeff had some bland halibut and I had some bland mac and cheese. Don’t they know about flavour up here? The beer was good. A pint each for us… good stuff.

The place is nice. Not too big or small. It’s within a plaza. There’s a grocery, liquour store, and pharmacy as well as many other small stores. It’s a ways from the lifts but better than last year.

Welp, off to a good start.

Day 2 – Riders on the storm

January 28th, 2007 by maryjojo | 2 Comments | Filed in travels

A sunny day set the atmosphere for great riding. We took are time getting ready to hit the slopes so we could get the half day rate. We got on the free village shuttle near our lodge which was very convient. It wasn’t to long until we got to the Blackcomb Day Lodge base. We got our tickets and hit the slopes.

The snow was very very packed with a bit of fluffy layer on top. Jeff was using his snowboard today and was quite ready to get the feel for it on some longer, wider groom runs. After warming up, we both took off like a banshee.

After two and half hours of riding, we boarded all the way down into Whistler Village. We typically get food at the bar just at the foot of the mountain – Longhorns. We ordered a pint of Reds and some burgers (salmon / veggie). Good stuff. A plate full of jojos comes with it. A ton of food but we manage to walk back to the lodge.

We slept the afternoon away, but eventually stepped out for some grub. The brewery is the closest restaurant and it was dang cold out, so we gave it another try. We had some cheesy pizza that really hit the spot.

Afterwards, we just went back to the lodge and vegged a bit more. Tired, we both were and ready for some more rest and some more riding tomorrow.

Day 4 – Happy Birthday, Jeff!!

January 31st, 2007 by maryjojo | 2 Comments | Filed in travels

Another beautiful day in BC and a great day for Jeff’s Birthday. What a way to celebrate his 29th birthday by hitting the slopes. This time we went all the way to the top portion of the mountain.

The view from above is beautiful. It’s so beautiful it could knock you off your board which we did. :D Luckily, the lines were much shorter than Sunday so we got a lot of runs in. The length of half the mountain is at least 2 runs at Alpental. There are so many runs to choose from and they are very wide. It’s great to explore a new one every ride down.

After all the runs we took, we sat down at Longhorns again, had their great veggie burgers and another “JUG” of beer. Not a pitcher, a JUG. The place was packed as always. Especially when everyone is coming off the mountain. The lifts run until 3:30; basically when the sun goes down, the lifts shut down.

After relaxing, we walked back to our room and relaxed in front of the tube. Its great to not have to be doing anything but just relax.

Eventually, we got hungry. One of the greatest places to eat up here is Mongolian Grill. Supposedly, there is one or more in Washington. It’s awesome because you go through this salad bar like setup and pick out what you want in your stir fry. We go here every time we come up to Whistler. This time I didn’t go crazy adding too much to my bowl. The past few times, I added a boat load of food and couldn’t finish it. Unfortunately, the honey lager they carried wasn’t on the menu like the last few times we came, so we tried an IPA which wasn’t bad.

After we ate our dinner, we went back to the room to finish our veggin’ in front of the TV and then went to bed. Snowboarding takes a lot out of you. To finish off a great relaxing birthday for Jeff, the fire alarm went off just as we were asleep. Disorientating at first, we got dressed for the cold and then down the stairwell. The fire truck came roaring down the street and stopped in front of the building. Out came a few fire fighters. They gathered the fire hose and off into the building. As far as we could tell, there was no smoke coming out of the building. Fifteen minutes went by and we were getting cold. The alarm finally stopped. Gladly, we were allowed to go back into the building. Back to the warm bed and continued where we left off.
